3 things I am changing

You may have noticed there have been some changes around here. On the website, that is. It's one part of some adjustments I'm making to the way I organise and run my business. Some major adjustments and some minor ones.

1. I'm Mobilising

First thing is, I've made my website "responsive". That means that the web pages change shape depending on what the viewer is using to look at them. There are three main formats - desktop, tablet and mobile and the site changes accordingly. You can see it working if you resize your browser window.

Why have I done this? Because research shows that more and more people are using mobile devices to look at web pages. And if a website looks bad on mobile, they are gone somewhere else in a flash.

2. I'm Optimising

Google has moved the goalposts recently. The techniques that we used to use no longer work. Now apparently methods like having lots of keyword meta tags or lots of links from other sites might even damage your ranking in the search engine results.

Google is trying to serve up the most useful results in response to searches. And that is a good thing. Instead of showing the sites with the most keywords or links they now look for high quality content and good user experience, and sites that show this will rank better.

Therefore by means of this blog, keeping content up to date and other relevant techniques I hope to keep on the right side of Google. Look out for a new blog post on a regular basis.

3. I'm Socialising

If you build it they won't come. If you don't market your website, nobody will come, except for a few that might randomly stumble across it.

My intention this year is to advertise my site in the most cost-effective way possible. That will be mainly through social sites like Facebook and Twitter and also I am going to explore Google Adwords. I haven't done much of this in the past, but if I want to increase visitors and business, then this is the way to go.

4. I'm Diversifying

Yes okay 4 things I'm changing (cue Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition!). I'm taking a good look at the services I offer. Deleting a few and expanding others.

One thing I'm really excited about is my new apparel line Curiouser & Curiouser. This is allowing me to get back into doing some of the type of design I love - typography, retro styles and quirky stuff. I will soon be opening a store so tee shirts can be bought online.
