Here’s my story: I came to New Zealand in the 1970s from the north of England, where I had attended Bradford College of Art (it does have some claims to fame — David Hockney being one!). At college I completed a 4-year diploma course in advertising.

In New Zealand I got a job as paste-up artist at ATS (Auckland Typographic Services) and from there went on to freelance with Gumbo Graphics and then a seven-year stint with Bob Harvey’s MacHarman Advertising. There I worked in the art studio and eventually left to work as Art Director at J Walter Thompson Advertising.

Later my brother and I formed Assembly Line where we worked for various advertising agencies and published a couple of our own magazines for a while (stop me if this is starting to get a bit boring).

It was there that I saw the writing on the wall and realised I had to move into web design, even though I resisted it for a long time. It’ll never catch on, I said.

So this iteration of my business is A-line Graphics, which is a shortened version of Assembly Line. It means the same thing — that I can add others to the “line” when needed.

That’s a picture of me above. As you can see, I’ve been around for a while. And over the years I’ve gained a lot of experience and skills, some of which these days might be called old-skool: typography, photography, screenprinting, darkroom work, graphic design, finished artwork, visualisation, advertising, copywriting, conceptualising, marketing, web design, css, html and probably others I can’t think of right now.
